The Paradox of Our Times By Jeff Dickson
The paradox of our time in history is that
we have taller buildings but shorter tempers,
wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints.
We spend more, but have less.
We buy more, but enjoy less.
We have bigger houses and smaller families,
more conveniences, but less time.
We have more degrees but less sense,
more knowledge, but less judgment,
more experts, yet more problems,
more medicine, but less wellness.
We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly,
laugh too little, drive too fast, get to angry too quickly,
stay up too late, get up too tired,
read too seldom, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.
We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.
We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.
We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life.
We’ve added years to life not life to years.
We’ve been all the way to the moon and back,
but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor.
We conquered outer space but not inner space.
We’ve done larger things, but not better things.
We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.
We’ve conquered the atom, but not our prejudice.
We write more, but learn less.
We accomplish less.
We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait.
We build more computers to hold more information,
to produce more copies than ever,
but we communicate less and less.
These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion,
big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships.
These are the days of two incomes but more divorce,
fancier houses, but broken homes.
These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers,
throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies,
and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill.
It is a time when there is much in the showroom window
and nothing in the stockroom.
A time when technology can bring this letter to you,
and a time when you can choose either to share this insight,
or to just hit delete.
Remember, spend some time with your loved ones,
because they are not going to be around forever.
Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe,
because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.
Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you,
because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart
and it doesn’t cost a cent.
Remember, to say, “I love you” to your partner and your loved ones,
but most of all mean it.
A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt
when it comes from deep inside of you.
Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday
that person will not be there again.
Give time to love, give time to speak
and give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.
건물은 높아졌지만 인격은 더 작아졌다.
고속도로는 넓어졌지만 시야는 더 좁아졌다.
소비는 많아졌지만 더 가난해지고
더 많은 물건을 사지만 기쁨은 줄어들었다.
집은 커졌지만 가족은 더 적어졌다.
더 편리해졌지만 시간은 더 없다.
학력은 높아졌지만 상식은 부족하고
지식은 많아졌지만 판단력은 모자라다.
전문가들은 늘어났지만 문제는 더 많아졌고
약은 많아졌지만 건강은 더 나빠졌다.
너무 분별없이 소비하고
너무 적게 웃고
너무 빨리 운전하고
너무 성급히 화를 낸다.
너무 많이 마시고 너무 많이 피우며
너무 늦게까지 깨어있고 너무 지쳐서 일어나며
너무 적게 책을 읽고, 텔레비전은 너무 많이 본다.
그리고 너무 드물게 기도한다.
가진 것은 몇 배가 되었지만 가치는 더 줄어들었다.
말은 너무 많이 하고
사랑은 적게하며
거짓말은 너무 자주 한다.
생활비를 버는 법은 배웠지만
어떻게 살 것인가는 잊어버렸고
인생을 사는 시간은 늘어났지만
시간 속에 삶의 의미를 넣는 법은 상실했다.
달에 갔다 왔지만
길을 건너가 이웃을 만나기는 더 힘들어졌다.
외계를 정복했는지 모르지만 우리 안의 세계는 잃어버렸다.
공기 정화기는 갖고 있지만 영혼은 더 오염되었고
원자는 쪼갤 수 있지만 편견을 부수지는 못한다.
더 많이 쓰게 되었지만, 더 적게 배우며,
성취는 더 줄어들었다.
돌진하는 법은 배웠지만, 기다리는 법은 배우지 못했다.
우리는 더 많은 정보를 쥐기 위해 더 많은 컴퓨터를 생산했지만,
서로의 의사 교환은 더욱 줄어들었다.
fast food와 slow digestion,
커다란 사람들 그러나 보잘것 없는 인격,
엄청난 부귀와 별 볼 일 없는 관계들.
맞벌이의 시대, 그러나 더욱 잦은 이혼.
보다 멋진 집들, 그러나 깨어진 가정.
더 빨라진 고속 철도
더 편리한 일회용 기저귀
더 많은 광고 전단
그리고 더 줄어든 양심
쾌락을 느끼게 하는 더 많은 약들
그리고 더 느끼기 어려워진 행복
